Maltese Language Update
Following the successful School visit to Malta last year, the Maltese embassy presented a set of books to Maynooth Educational Campus so as to promote the teaching of the Maltese Language, which is one of the 24 official languages of EU. The books were presented by Ms Rachel Schembri, from the Maltese Literacy Support Unit, and who was accompanied by Mr Leo Sacco, Maltese Ambassador to Ireland.
The simple ceremony was held in the School Library in the presence of a number of EAL students. Ms Helen English, coordinator of International Languages Department, first explained to the visitors the place that the language support programme has in the school and the various activities that were held. Students then talked of their visit to Malta and what it was like to be exposed to the Maltese language and learn some basic phrases.
Before presenting the books to the school, Ms Rachel explained how as an agency they sought to support the learning of the Maltese language as this helps students in their sense of identity. Mr Sacco expressed his appreciation to the school for the way in which cultural diversity is valued, supported and affirmed, and which helps in the integration of the students.
In thanking the Maltese Ambassador, Mr Nevin, Principal of MPPS, explained how EAL students in the school are encouraged and supported to maintain a dynamic connection to their own language and culture throughout their school life. Mr Nevin also thanked Ms Helen English for being instrumental in creating an intercultural learning environment for the benefit of our students. Together with Ms McCauley, Principal of MCC, he congratulated her on behalf of the school for the recent prestigious national award she won in acknowledgment of her role in promoting the learning of languages. The students presented her with a book on Roman Malta in appreciation.
Another trip to Malta is being organised by the school for this year and students will have an opportunity in school to learn some Maltese in advance of the trip. Also it is good to mention that one of our 6th Yr students of Maltese decent will be sitting the Maltese L.C. exam in June.
