Maynooth 1st Year girls continue on winning spree.
Maynooth Post Primary 6 St. Raphaela’s Stillorgan 1
The 1st Year girls from Maynooth Post Primary put on another fantastic display on Thursday to advance to the Quarter Final stages of Leinster Soccer League.
The girls started brightly and enjoyed much of the possession at the beginning of the game, but found it hard to capitalised due to a packed Stillorgan defence. Eimear Quinn went close, when Ava Cullen's precision pass put her through on goal, only to be denied by the keeper.
The opening score came in the 14th minute, when Molly Berns made a super tackle to break down the St Raphaela’s attack, the ball was swiftly moved up the field to Roisin Howly who hit low and hard into the right hand corner of the net.
A second goal quickly followed from the penalty spot; Cullen stepped up and made no mistake to produce a spot kick that would rival Ronaldo’s from the previous night!
The girls didn’t become complacent and continued to attack, Isabella Maher and Aoife Ganley made good runs down the wings, and it wasn’t long until the girls added 2 more from Cullen and Quinn.
St. Raphaela’s found it near impossible to get pass Maynooth’s strong back four of Eve Heslin, Roisin Nolan, Burns and Holly Keely, and only got one shot on Deirdre Hensey in the first half.
The girls continued their great form in the second half, there was more solid defending with the introduction of Emma McGinn and Niamh Hayes made a superb run from midfield and slotted pass the Stillorgan keeper. Vivienne Dowd came close but it was Alicia Sankay who added the final goal for the Maynooth girls to bring their tally to 6.
St. Raphaela's 'never give up' attitude saw them pull a goal back, although a free out could have as easily been awarded as Hensey had her hands firmly on the ball when she was tackled.
The girl's now face St Joseph's, Lucan in the Quarter Final. Well done to all girls involved today!
