AWARDS & ACHIEVEMENTS OF OUR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

I.T.I.A. Translation Competition

Congratulations to our students Alex Harding (2016), Elena Giardini (2016), Emma Keane (2017), Niamh Krahn (2019), Kiki Ren (2018) and Vicky He (2019) who have all won awards for best translations in this competition. Alex won for the best translation from Spanish to English, Elena for Italian to English, Emma & Niamh from German to English, Vicky & Kiki from Chinese to English.

The competition is organised annually by the Irish Translators & Interpreters’ Association of Ireland (ITIA) for students in second level in Ireland. Students are invited to translate an excerpt from a novel or short story from any one of the following languages into English: Chinese, French, German, Irish, Italian, Polish, Japanese or Spanish.

The prizewinners were invited to receive their awards in a prize-giving ceremony in Dublin. The award recognises their exceptional ability to translate literary texts.

The recognition of their linguistic skills will encourage them to continue to engage actively with languages and motivate them to consider careers as professional translators.

We are very proud of the success of our young translators.

Best of luck to all our students who will be participating in the competition this year.

European Commission’s Juvenes Translatores Competition

In November, each year students across Europe have the opportunity to test their skill as translators in the Juvenes Translatores (Young Translators) competition organised by the European Commission. The Commission's Directorate-General for Translation has been organising the Juvenes Translatores (Latin for ‘young translators) contest every year since 2007.

Its aim is to promote language learning in schools and give young people a taste of what it is like to be a professional translator. It is open to 17-year-old secondary school students and takes place at the same time in all selected schools across the EU. Students may choose to translate from and into any of the 24 official languages of the EU. The contest has inspired and encouraged some of the participants to pursue their languages at university level and to become professional translators.

The challenge for students is to aim to produce a high quality translation that should have the same impact on the reader as the original text. One winner is selected from each of the EU member states and the prize-giving ceremony takes place in Brussels.

Each year 11 schools are selected to represent Ireland in the competition. MEC has participated a number of times in this competition. The competition gives our international students an excellent opportunity to apply their language skills. In November 2019 five students from MEC took part, translating from Irish, German, Polish and Romanian. Well done to them all!
