Maynooth Post Primary – Versus – Lucan CBS 14/10/09

On a packed Thursday lunch time in the Lucan CBS grounds, the U-14 boys’ footballers played their second game of the Dublin Championship. After a super win against Colaiste Ciarán of Leixlip in the first game, Maynooth were on a real high, however, Lucan CBS proved to be a stern test.  Lucan started the brighter of the two sides with two nice points in quick succession. All of a sudden, Maynooth began to find their feet and when Tadhg Forde collected a breaking ball which he delivered to the nippy half forward Shane McGuinness, Maynooth got their first point of the game. A storming run from outstanding half back Austin Dunne created a goal for Ronan Gorey who lashed the ball into the top corner of the net. Aaron Cunningham popped over another nice score to put Maynooth further in front. A stunning goal from Shane McGuinness gave Maynooth what looked like a great lead going into half time; however Lucan got lucky with a quick free which ended up in the back of Declan Burke’s net just as the half time whistle went. The score at half time read Maynooth   2-2 to Lucan CBS’s 1-2.

A half time team talk from both Mr Gill and Mr Dalton brought the lads out with a spark. Despite giving away an early point from a free, Maynooth began to seriously dominate. Paul Mescal, Donnacha Healy and Austin Dunne kept mopping up possession and delivered pin point accurate passes to their quick half forward line. Tadhg Forde and Eoin Byrne swapped positions, and this move worked a trick. Eoin Byrne soon caught a high ball and off loaded to the explosive Paul Mescal on the run who curled the ball over the bar in fine style. An exceptional piece of defending from Darren Maguire enabled the ball to be moved up field to Tadhg Forde who finished in the top corner of the net to extend Maynooth’s lead. At this point Séan Kearney and Conor Gorman were introduced to give Maynooth fresh legs. Lucan quickly got back on the score board with another well taken point. A good display of hand passing skills enabled Tadhg Forde another opportunity for goal but this effort was saved wide by the Lucan goalkeeper. The 45 that followed was squandered wide. During a period where Maynooth took their foot off the pedal, Declan Burke proved a hero with an outstanding double save. Eoin Byrne kept the scoreboard ticking over with another point. Ronan Gorey was then awarded a penalty which he finished fantastically. An onrush of Lucan scores provided a tense finish in which they scored 1-2. The Post Primary prevailed winners at the final whistle by 4-4 to 2-7.
