| Vocational Schools Leinster "B" Final -v- Prosperous |
|
Maynooth Post Primary's senior boy's football team finally got over the hurdle that was winning the Vocational Schools Leinster "B" final at the third attempt. It was a mark of Maynooth's consitancy that this was the third year in a row the school competed in this final. Before the game started it was gauranteed to produce Kildare's first champions as St. Farnans of Prosperous provided the opposition. Maynooth started the game as favourites and lived up to this by opening up a four point lead before Prosperous scored their first from a free. Maynooth kicked on again and were on six points before Prosperous found their stride and tagged on three more points to reduce the gap to six nearing half time. Maynooth were somewhat lucky to keep fifteen player on the pitch when James Durcan Was booked for a shoulder to the front of his oppponent, but the referee deemed it not to be deliberate. Two very important scores followed from Maynooth before the half time to increase the gap to four points on the break. The winning of this game came after the break as Maynooth played their best football in this period, the big difference being the goal. This and some points opened up the gap and the game became slightly comfortable. However after that first ten minutes, the game became scrappy and the Ration of frees increased, some more obvious than others. Maynooths defence coped well ang Hughie Faherty played a very difficult role as his man was dropped back into Midfield but Hughie could not be pulled out too far. The extra space created in St. Farnan's full forward line might have contributed to the prosperous scoring a goal, but Darragh Corcoran might have felt agreived not to have recieved a free out in the build up. In the end Maynooth had built up a substantial lead early in the second half which Prosperous were not going to close. Maynooth now advance to the All-Ireland Vocational School's "B" Semi-final against Gaelcolaiste Tralee in Tipperary town on Saturday the 12th March. |
