History
A Good History or Geography Student shows….
- An interest in the world as it is now and how it came to be so.
- A thirst for knowledge to explain and explore the current situation.
- An ability to express themselves accurately and to support their arguments with relevant information.
- An appreciation of historical sources and a geographer’s understanding of causes.
- An interest in reading and watching relevant programmes on television and video.
HISTORY
Embracing the world of politics, economics, religion and philosophy, History can be a most enjoyable challenge, developing skills such as identifying main issues and the ability to select relevant information.
A new History Syllabus in Leaving Certificate began in September 2004. A choice of two courses is presented i.e. c.1500 – 1800 and c.1800 – 2000. Our present Leaving Certificate class has opted for the modern course.
There are four interesting features in the new syllabus.
- For the first time a “Documents” based question, somewhat akin to question 2 of Junior Cert, is included.
- The Research Study - 20% of the total is extended to Ordinary Level and is presented as a “file” of work rather than memorised and written down in the exam.
- Classes select topics from the Syllabus rather than studying the whole course from c.1800 –2000. Our present Leaving Certificate class have chosen two topics in Irish History 1870-1949
- An interesting selection of women appear on the syllabus, ranging from Eleanor Fitzgerald of Maynooth to Marilyn Monroe of Hollwood.
Sounds “exciting” ladies and gentlemen!! - However the stuff of History does not change, you have to be interested. Perhaps a brief chat with any of our Leaving Certificate students will give you an insight into what is involved.
