Music

The Leaving Certificate Music Course aims to equip students for life after school by laying solid foundation for further Music studies while keeping in mind the special value of music in leisure-time activities. Particular emphasis is placed on the practical, aural and composition aspects of music.

Music for Leaving Certificate is divided into three sections. This is a relatively new course which is very accessible to students from all musical backgrounds. It provides an opportunity for students to discover many different types of music from Classical to Irish to Rock Music as well as an option to study music technology.

The three sections are as follows:

Composition 25%: Students build on skills learned at Junior Certificate level. Students learn to compose their own melodies as well as the basics of harmony.

Listening 25%: Students study prescribed music of many different types with an emphasis on developing their aural skills.

Performance 25%: Students are required to play three pieces at Grade 5 standard of equivalent.
(This usually takes place in April of Leaving Cert year)

The final 25% can be in any of the three sections depending on where students' particular talents lie. In this way 50% of the total mark will be in one area.
