Accounting

Extending beyond the actual making of records i.e. book-keeping, Accounting is concerned with the use these records are put to, their analysis and interpretation. It is an excellent preparation for any business-related occupation. Though not essential for entry to any business college, Accounting is useful for students wishing to pursue any third level Business related course.

The purpose of Accounting is to provide information that you can use to increase your chance of making correct financial decisions. We all deal with money at some stage in life, it is true to say that we are all involved in some accountancy work, no matter how well or how badly we manage money.

While it is necessary to have mathematical skills you do not need honours level maths for accountancy work. You must, however, be conscientious and painstaking in your work as it requires detailed analysis of figures and data. Accountants do well in good times and bad, as their expertise is equally in demand when people have money to invest or when the business environment is not so good and there is a focus on cost controls. A good Accountancy qualification which is recognised internationally can also be a passport to working abroad. It is a very interesting, challenging and rewarding subject.

In all there are over 20 different types of questions on the syllabus varying from Final Accounts to Budgeting.

The Leaving Cert exam contains 9 questions and is broken up into 3 sections

Section 1 Financial 120 marks (one long or 2 short)
Section 2 Financial 200 marks
Section 3 Management 80 marks

Approximately three quarters of the exam usually involves calculations and one quarter theory.
