French
At senior level, skills acquired in the Junior Cert French syllabus are developed. These skills include aural and reading comprehension and proficiency in written French. Written tasks for Leaving Cert ordinary level include letters and post-cards/notes. Higher level covers a wide range of styles, for example – personal diary entries, magazine type articles and business letters. There is no examination of Oral French in the Junior Cert. Exam. At Senior Cycle, however, oral communication assumes much greater importance, so much more class-time is devoted to the development of oral skills and students must avail themselves of every opportunity to prepare themselves thoroughly for this aspect of the exam. The fundamental importance of grammar, the foundation on which all accurate language usage is based, continues to be emphasised at Senior Cycle.
