Materials Technology Wood
Materials Technology Wood is a junior cycle subject commonly refered to as Woodwork. Pupils studying this subject will learn about different materials but predominantly wood. They will also learn about the tools & technology used to work these materials. This subject is mostly a practical subject. This is reflected in the Junior Cert marks awarded in the ration or 1/3 theory, 2/3 thirds Practical. In Maynooth Post Primary, we try and teach each year to this ratio also, so 1st, 2nd & 3rd year classes will complete 2/3 practical work to 1/3 theory. 1st Yr: Introduction to Basic tools, Basic Joints and projects such as keyrings, model car/plane, puzzle game, clock... 2nd Yr: Pupils are introduced to the design process, and design their own projects, within certain limitations such as size & difficulty. Projects designed and made in recent years include lamps, connect 4 puzzles, DVD holders & rubbish bins for bedrooms. 3rd Yr: Junior Cert Project are issued after the Autumn mid-term and pupils learn theory. Both ordinary & higher level get a choice of 3 briefs. Pupils then design and make 1 of these projects, and create a writen portfolio detailing their design, research, manufacture, and what they have learned during its making. This is due, usually in the middle of April. The year ends with a 2 hour exam. |
