Litter Picking every week
- We had to order twelve litter pickers from B&Q.
- After getting the litter pickers we had to make up a timetable for when we would litter pick. It would usually be one class every week.
- We then pick four people to help us every week to litter pick around the school grounds. It takes about fifteen to twenty minutes and after this we sort out the litter and include it in our survey.
- As coordinators we had to create a survey which would enable us to find out how much litter was around the school and also to see if there was an improvement from the previous week. The survey is divided up into four categories as follows: bottles, cans, paper and other. This survey will last for the whole year.
- When litter picking we divide the team into two groups of three people. Each group has three litter pickers, one recycling bin and another bin for the non-recyclable rubbish.
- As a green school and as we are aiming to obtain the green school flag again we are trying to litter pick downtown in Maynooth. In order to do this we are in contact with Tidy Towns and hopefully we will be able to litter pick downtown before February.
- We have also created a Litter Pick rota. This involves both first and second years where TYs bring a class out every week to litter pick with them.
- The recyclable rubbish that we do pick up may not go to waste and maybe used in green schools projects.
