Materials Technology Wood, commonly referred to as Woodwork, is a Junior Cycle subject, where pupil learn basics skills in how to work with wood. Other materials might also used, such as metals, plastics, sponge and fabrics, but predominantly the subject concentrates on using wood.
From September 2019 all pupils picking this subject will start the Junior Cycle course called Wood Technology. Click here to view information on this new subject.
1st year is spent mostly on safety, basic skills, using hand tools and joint work.
2nd year introduces more design elements into each project as well as a first introduction to design briefs and portfolios work.
3rd year sees a project completed which will form part of the junior cert marks.
Awarding of marks:
Theory:100 marks gained from a written exam in June of third year.
Project: 200 marks gained by designing, making and writing a substantial portfolio on the project
The project itself is 130 marks
The written portfolio is 70 marks

Here is a short selection of the work currently being done in class by second years who are making a table. Chiseling, sawing, sanding and some lathe work are all happening these days
