Leaving Cert Subjects
At Senior Cycle students must study English, Maths, Irish*, SPHE and PE
These are compulsory subjects although there is no State Exam for SPHE or general PE.
Brief Information sheets on these core subjects are available by clicking on the subject..
*Students with an Irish exemption will be offered the opportunity to study LCVP in lieu of Irish so they are not at the loss of subject when it comes to the Leaving Cert
Students must then select four optional subjects to complete their Senior Cycle studies and sit for examination.
Below are guides for all the optional subjects offered in Maynooth Post Primary.
Please note that significant redevelopment of Senior Cycle subjects began in 2025 and these changes are being rolled out over a number of years in tranches.Students should be aware of which subject specifications are changing– please see timeline below.

***NB please note that changes to Accountancy and English have been paused but will commence in 2027
One of the main changes to Senior Cycle subjects is the introduction of AACs (Additional Assessment Components). These will earn students at least 40% of available marks. They will assess a broader range of learning than can be captured through a traditional written examination and they aim to enhance the assessment experience of student.
