Erasmus+ Project 2016-2018

The school has been very fortunate to once again obtain a place on the Erasmus+ two-year project. This project is a fully funded initiative by the European Union in which European schools from five different countries collate ideas to share best practices from their individual educational systems. Each country hosts for a week in which the other four schools are invited to travel to the host country and visit their school. During this week, the host school introduces the European schools to their education system, their national sports, whilst also giving them a feel for the culture of that country by going on a few trips. The countries involved in the project are Sweden, Iceland, France and Portugal. Twenty-four students from Transition Year were fortunate enough to be selected for this prestigious project, which gives them the opportunity to make new friends, learn about other cultures and visit schools from different countries. As we were the first country to host, the four other schools made their way to Maynooth on the 15th of January this year for a jammed pack week of activities. The twenty-four TY students who were selected, hosted one European student for the week at home, whilst members of staff hosted the European teachers. New friendships were forged, different cultures were shared and plenty of fun was had. Over the next eighteen months, six students will visit each country involved. The first trip for our students was Iceland in May 2017. This will be followed by Sweden in October, France in January 2018 and Portugal in May 2018.
