The President’s Award, Gaisce, is a National programme is a self-development programme for young people. There are three levels to the Award programme, starting with Bronze and progressing to Silver or Gold.

In Maynooth Post-Primary school, we offer Transition Year students the opportunity to complete the Bronze Award programme. This consists of three challenge areas: Community Involvement, Personal Skill, Physical Recreation and an Adventure Journey. Each challenge area requires a minimum participation of one hour a week for 13 weeks.

The Community Involvement area provides students with the opportunity to volunteer with charities or with various community groups. Examples are volunteering in Dogs Trust, Charity Shops and Tidy Towns or visiting an elderly neighbour.

The Personal Skill area, on the other hand, facilitates the development of an existing skill or allows students to pick up a new skill. Examples include, baking, swimming, learning a new language and learning how to play a musical instrument.

Finally, in the Physical Recreation area students can improve their ability in a physical activity they already take part in or try out a new sport or exercise.

The final part of the Bronze Award is the Adventure Journey to Glendalough where students hike 30km over a two-day period. The students stay overnight in Glendalough Hostel where they plan and prepare a meal for the group. Often this proves to be the most memorable aspect of Gaisce for students.

Achieving this award requires a significant commitment, however in return each student is rewarded with a great sense of achievement and community spirit.
